Thursday Thoughts........
Ohhhhhhhhhh what a moment Wyatt and I just shared in his bedroom. As I was putting him to bed tonight, we were rocking and I was singing. After, I finished my song, I whispered "I love you" among other things, and he looked me in the eyes, and whispered back. Whispered an entire conversation, if only I could have understood him. I think the two things that got me were that he looked me in the eyes, and he whispered. We continue this for a few minutes before I said good night. If you know our story, then you know that bonding is something that happens S-L-O-W-L-Y, and eye contact has been non existent until the last month or so. Even now it is only a few direct looks a day, but we are learning all kinds of new wonderful techniques with our (O.T)Occupational Therapist. I would say that we are different, but hopefully if we stop to think about this we will all do it more. Play needs to include some purpose, what I mean by this is take the swing for example. How many times have we put our child in, and just started swinging away as we talked to the family next to us, or took a phone call, or let ourselves drift off to where we need to be or what we need to be doing next? Never will Wyatt be in a swing that I do not take the time to make eye contact, EYE contact is so important in children and adults, but it is not something that just happens and has to be taught as a baby/toddler. Wyatt never had anyone take the time to make eye contact, and talk to him as a baby. Most people do this on the changing table, not when you are in an orphanage and 10 other babies need diapers changed too! I never realized how little eye contact we were exchanging, but we are making great leaps now. Also at O.T today Wyatt brought the bubbles to me, and said Momma. He used my name correctly!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh, I love this little boy...............

Oh how wonderful! I just pictured you all and your sweet eye contact moment together, as I was reading. Thanks for the reminder not to get wrapped up in other stuff and to make sure we give our kiddos eye contact!
What a beautiful post! I am so happy for you! I love hearing about how he continues to grow. Thanks for sharing.

I love reading your take on Wyatt and how he is doing. He was wonderful in therapy - what a difference a few weeks makes! You are doing all the right things! The words you can understand will come, but I know you understood his heart, his connection with you. How lovely.

glad to hear about the eye contact! woohoo!
My daughter Jill sent me a link to your website. She absolutely adores working with Wyatt. (She's in the OT program) Thank you, thank you for Wyatt. He cemented the idea of what being in OT is all about for her. She has definitely made up her mind now. Stephanie McLain
